Abstract:

Sight reading practices and teaching have been subject of several researches in performance. Authors such as Lewandowska & Schmuckler (2019), Pastorini (2016), Arôxa (2013), Gonçalves (2018), Russel (2019), Zhukov (2014), and LIM et al., (2019) demonstrate the expressiveness of studies in the area. In music education major studies, however, there are few investigations, although there is a demand for it on practices that focus on beginning instrumentalists. In this study we use as reference the Intellectual Styles of Sternberg, Wagner & Zhang (2007) to reflect, try to explain and contribute to the development of this praxis. In order to answer the following question: Is it possible to objectively measure sight reading music of undergraduate students of music education in Brazil? the Inventory of Revised Thinking Styles 2 will be used, and from that scale, a new instrument will be developed.  The goal is to understand cognitively the assessment of sight reading of music education students in Brazil. Through the test “Revised Thinking Styles Inventory II / TSI-R2”, the students’ cognitive processing patterns and their intellectual preferences will be assessed. This will provide support for developing a test of the latent trait – sight reading of undergraduate students, observed by tested items with evidence of validity.
