Abstract:Aim: The study aims to investigate the impact of a multidisciplinary and multidimensional teaching model on the development of aural awareness of music students. The model articulates three dimensions: (1) elements of the musical syntax (rhythm, melody and harmony); (2) elements intrinsically transversal in the music learning process (expressive, stylistic and instrumental); (3) cognitive skills/processes present in the development of musical syntax. Methods: The research was developed in the context of higher education using an experimental design (experimental and control group). A total sample of 42 music students was involved in the study, ranging in age from 18 to 24 years. Each session was structured according to three complementary activities: (1) repertoire; (2) auditory analysis; (3) context. The data were collected in the beginning and at the end of the implementation period (40 sessions of 30 minutes duration), through collection instruments design to assessing the level of comprehension and aural recognition of the different categories present in the musical discourse. Results: Exist significant differences in the level of aural recognition between the experimental and control group regarding the variables recognize the rhythmic/metric structure (t = 3.179, calculated with homogeneous variances of F = 1.013 and p = 0.320, is significant at a significance level of 0.003) and recognize the melodic/harmonic organization (t=2.171, calculated with homogeneous variances of F = 2.654 and p = 0.111, is significant at a significance level of 0.010). Conclusion: The multidisciplinary and multidimensional model contribute to development aural awareness and understanding fundamental concepts of musical syntax.
